So there was some sports thing on TV the other day. It had a buncha guys running around in tight pants jumping on top of each other and the whole thing was, frankly, a little gay. But about half way through, Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers came out and played some songs! It was awesome! So that got me digging through my compact discs. And you know what? Tom Petty did a lot of awesome things in the mid-90s.
Join me now, as we step into the Way Back Machineā¢. The year was 1996; Bill Clinton was president and the nation was fascinated with emerging technologies like the internet and fire. Having recently recorded a few albums with ELO front man Jeff Lynne, Petty found a new, earthier sound that combined folk and the subtler edges of 60’s pop with his time-tested blues rock. Meanwhile, 90’s Hottie McHottington Jennifer Aniston had just filmed a movie in dire need of a soundtrack. Petty rose to the occasion. The lead single from this recording was “Walls (Circus)”.
TL;DR: The video has elephants, Alison!
I love that the lotus is prop, yet it looks totally cg-ed.
Anyway, I think a lot of rock stars don’t get any good press after their heyday and it’s unfair really. This song is just as good as the stuff he turned out earlier.
I don’t know why I’m defending it though. I don’t love this song, but I don’t really hate it.
Mostly, I just wish Tom Petty had a prettier face.
And omg… I’ve been so away from anything. Never in my life have I ever seen TL;DR.. I had to look it up on the internets!
OK, I’ve listened to this about four hundred more times, and I’ve decided that I like it more than I hate it.
But then again, I’ve got a heart so big I could crush this town. I’ll let any song in, letting it get bigger and bigger until I crush the world.
