I’ll be the first to admit that my musical tastes tend to land me in a big pile of lame, but… well, I have no buts. Just preemptive hostility. So, fuck you, Zach. Fuck you.
I would like to pretend that Korean Pop music is better than American, but even I can’t delude myself to such extents. The simple truth of the matter is that it’s easier to like a pop song if you don’t understand the completely insipid and trite lyrics. This, coupled with the fact the Koreans have no illusions about the separation of rap and pop music (i.e, none) makes it an easier listen than American Pop.
So, it is now that introduce to you Korean Pop song that is such a B-side that they don’t even dance to it at concerts, Shinhwa’s Endless Love.
I’m not going to jabber on about musical technicality, beautiful lyrics, or ingenious composition, because frankly this song is just copy of a copy of a copy. Nevertheless, Hyesung, the lead singer, has a stunning voice that draws you in, and the chord structures are wonderfully enticing. But then again, I am a sucker for a good voice and interesting chord changes.
This song, assuredly, does not deserve to be remembered in the annals of music history, nor on our most pretentious of playlists, but it does deserve a place in our hearts where we keep all of our dark and dirty secrets hidden. Or, in my case, the place I carved out for Savage Garden (yes, again, I must say a preemptive fuck you).
Anytime I need to see your face I just close my eyes and I’m taken to a place where…. you crystallize… magenta? …here-a taken shelter in the base of my spine just like-a drink-a cherry cola.
Right up there with “One Week” and “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)”
Re-emptive “fuck you too, Ally.”
